I praise all who are fighting obesity changing youths lives one at a time. It is very hard work and takes an unbelievable commitment. The issue of youth obesity is growing faster than the attempts to fix it. Here are a few reasons I personally feel are why this is happening. It isn’t all but these are my main points:

A). Childhood obesity is on the rise because of more than one issue.
To start, every time this topic is brought up for discussion the talk is so one dimensional. Just as it is with the subject of adult obesity. For example the sugar debate! Fixing a complex situation takes understanding all components not blaming one entity. It is just ignorant!
List of some reasons why childhood obesity is on the rise:
1) the mis-education of the fundamental foundation (law of thermodynamics) of what really causes fat loss (energy deficit) and fat gain (energy surplus). “It becomes a waste of time when misconceptions lead the train of thought in trying to fix an issue of reality.”
2) the misconceptions on what is thought to be right is so ingrained into mainstream society that now these thoughts and methods are being taught to our youth and in essence is becoming part of tradition.
3) parents are more concerned with their kids being HAPPY instead of teaching fundamentals of boundaries, control, and healthy habits. *teaching these fundamentals is what makes them HAPPY down the road because they don’t get weight related diseases or bullied for being overweight.
4) Society and Technology!! Schools decreasing activities, kid can’t go outside as much, videos games, etc, etc, etc! Well these are actual things that could contribute but don’t act like there are not options to counter act this. How bout boys and girl club, Sports, Wii fit, biking with your kid, telling your kid that he or she can’t eat that huge candy bar, and the list goes on. Come on ADULTS! Look at the picture above. Your KIDS follow YOU!!

In conclusion to solve this epidemic we must teach the right education and limit money driven info, parents and adults get responsible, and quit blaming entities that really would never fix the problem alone. COMMONSENSE!

Baseball for Youth

20120324-161751.jpgYouth Baseball is a very large sport in almost everywhere, and it usually is year round. The picture is of my son Donovan who loves baseball and martial arts. Sitting here in Conway Arkansas baseball park waiting for their second game. Gave him some skittles to get those sugar levels back up quickly because they have 10 minutes before the next game.
In this post I’m not going to be too detailed and cover all components. I want to talk about enough so you get the point. Youth performance is a topic I’m passionate about because for youth that term is miss leading to parents and the athletes! My son is 10 years old and he started playing baseball at…..10 years old. His “performance” has elevated faster than most kids that have played since they were 5 years old. Now with that said you are probably saying he must be talented (don’t get me wrong I very proud of him) but the truth is all kids are at the same developmental stage when they are the same age. Donovan was properly put through the right things up to now. Before 9 or 10 years old kids are learning what movements are right and wrong, what certain instructions mean, attitude toward themselves, others and the sport they play, and how to relate to what is asked and applying it to action. Correcting tightness and weakness issues and learning foundational skills of as many activities as possible. About 10 years old to 13 they start mastering what ever skill, technique, or habits they have been taught. Now when I’m talking about this it doesn’t mean specific position sports training and skills. It is all the things that make up an athlete, which has many components. At this age it is important to start learning more complex movements and making sure majority of the time is spent correcting movement imbalances and learning lifting movements because the next stage strength training becomes a dominant part of training.
Now the teenage years is where strength, power, speed, and skills improve pretty quickly. With this increase in abilities, the injuries can be much more severe and more frequent. Putting your kid through the proper training up until now will be paying off because now their foundation is set and they will hit their true potential with the least chances of injury.
In conclusion let’s take care of our kids. Everyone wants their kid to be the best. If you truely want that then give them the best both short and long term. Kids are not horses that race in horse races. If the goal is for a college scholarship then do it right from the beginning!
